Overview

The old low city, beyond the temple gate

Asakusa is the heart of shitamachi, the old low city of merchants and craftspeople. Its temple, Senso-ji, is the oldest in Tokyo, and the streets around it still sell rice crackers, festival goods and handmade tools.

Your guide shows you the temple the way locals use it, then the corners most visitors walk past: an underground arcade from the 1950s and the wholesale street where Tokyo’s chefs buy their knives.

The area

The heart of the old low city

Shitamachi

Edo was split between the samurai on the hills and the merchants and craftspeople in the low ground by the river. Asakusa was the heart of that low city, the shitamachi.

A temple town

Senso-ji drew pilgrims for centuries, and in the Edo period the streets around it became the city’s entertainment district, with theatres, stalls and teahouses.

Kaminarimon

The gate is guarded by the gods of wind and thunder. The present gate dates from 1960, rebuilt with a gift from Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic.

The kitchen street

Kitchenware wholesalers gathered in Kappabashi in the early twentieth century to supply Tokyo’s restaurants, and the street still sells to chefs as well as visitors.

How the day unfolds

Below the station, the Asakusa Underground Street opened in 1955 and is said to be the oldest underground shopping street in Japan, with tiny noodle and set-meal counters.

Backstreets

Old coffee shops, craft workshops and sweet makers in the lanes around the temple.

60 min
